I’m not a huge tennis fan, but as Wimbledon is not that far from me I like to keep in touch with the action. Yesterday afternoon I was watching one of the women’s semi finals and noticed an unexpected thing. A little POT BELLY on one of the players. This got me thinking about my core philospohy for optimal health. I call it the “health triangle”. Should one of the 3 sides of the triangle not be present then the whole thing collapses.
The Health Triangle consists of Nutrition, Physical Fitness, and Mental Fitness.
No matter what sport you are in or what goal you are striving to achieve you need to maintain the 3 sides of the health triangle. Think about fat loss, all 3 are so important. You could workout until you are blue in the face, doing all the correct exercises, the correct rest periods, progressions etc. Yes you will get stronger but if fat loss is you goal, and your nutrition is not in shape, then you are wasting your time. Even if you get your nutrition right and exercise right but your mind is elsewhere, you cheat, miss sessions, make up excuses, change programmes every week. The triangle will collapse.
So how does this relate to Wimbledon? Well that pot bellied young tennis player I’m sure trains every hour she can, I’m sure she is fitter than me and most other people. So why the pot belly? Nutrition needs a bit of work maybe? Sure, fat loss and reducing her pot belly are not her primary goals but it just goes to show that even if someone this fit can have a pot belly what hope do we all have?
We have huge amounts of hope because we can maintain our Health Triangle. We don’t have to exercise this hard. We just need to maintain a strong level of nutrition, exercise regularly and get our mind and focus in shape. Get these 3 things straight and you can achieve anything, except perhaps the Wimbledon title
