Personal Training Secret #2 Designing Workout Routines with Movement Patterns

The human body is only designed to move in a number of ways, we can see this by looking at the joint structure and muscle distribution throughout the body.

When it comes to designing your workout nothing could be simpler than following the natural movements of the body. Include all the movements and you know you have hit every muscle in the body. The more muscles that you hit the more energy you use. Following the natural movement patterns of body each time you workout will produce a more time efficient workout than any other method, guaranteed!

Here are the movements, and you'll notice no Bicep Curls or Tricep Extensions in sight....

1. Deadlift - variations on the Deadlift include the Clean, Kettlebell Swing etc.

2. Squat - variations on the Squat include the Single Leg Squat (Pistol), Squat Jumps, Burpees etc.

3. Lunge - lots of variations of the Lunge including Side Lunges, Reverse Lunges, Static Lunges, Walking Lunges etc.

4. Push - you can break the push down into Horizontal Push eg. Push Ups and Vertical Push eg. Overhead Press

5. Pull - also can be broken down into Horizontal Pull eg. Row and Vertical Pull eg. Pull Ups

6. Rotation - can be rotation or anti-rotation so can include Cable Chops, Bird Dogs, Shoulder Taps etc...

Every human being develops the ability to move in all 6 of these movement patterns as we evolve through childhood. As we get older we use them less and less and start to incorporate shortcuts into our workout routines to avoid them. We try to cheat nature. The result is often dysfunctional movement patterns and the inability to simply move!

It's time for you to claim back your movement patterns. Start by practicing each of the movement patterns above. Practice the one's that you find most difficult. Forget Bicep Curls and Tricep extensions these we all exercises invented by the Body Building era. Stay natural, follow the body's natural movements and your body will reward you.
