Personal Training Secret #3 Are you wasting your time with exercise?

OK I'm going to keep this short and to the point, "Most people don't workout hard enough to get results from exercise".

Now of course most exercise is better than none and I would rarely discourage people from exercise.  But, to get good results from exercise you need to work hard. You need to push yourself into the Adaptation Zone.

If you take a step back and look at the reasoning behind physical adaptation from exercise you can see why.

When you exercise hard or perform a movement or sport you have not done for a long time then the body struggles. It uses extra energy to fuel muscle movements. Unfamiliar demands placed on the body cause your body to use up valuable resources in order to function.

Now, once the activity or workout is over the body makes adaptations (known as Super Compensation) in order to be better prepared for those same movements or activities next time. Muscles get stronger, Cardio Improves (Increases in Mitochondria) etc.

The body is saying, "If that activity happens again I want to be ready".

This is the cycle that you go through when you workout and get fitter and stronger.

But this whole cycle is dependant on exercising hard enough in the first place for the body to need to make adaptions.

The harder you push yourself the more adaptions the body needs to make for the next workout. This includes using extra energy for homeostasis and ultimately post exercise fat loss. Just go through the motions of exercise and little if any adaptions are necessary.

Unfortunately, most people when exercising will STOP just at the exact point when they would get the most from their workout. They will not step over into that Adaption Zone. It's easy to identify this zone, when your brain is saying STOP, this is the start of the zone. Just pushing that little bit harder will make all the difference.

Walking in to any gym, teaching any number of classes or training a client one on one I can tell within minutes whether someone is going to get results or is just wasting their time. They are not prepared to step over that line!

So if you want to get results from exercise push a little harder, when the brain says stop carry on a little. Don't be one of the majority that just goes to the gym and hangs out.

Get in, Work Hard and Get out!

This way the body is forced to make adaptions and ultimately you get the rewards that come with it, rapid fat loss and a beautiful toned body!
