What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is rapidly on the increase. It is a chronic metabolic disorder where the body is unable to produce or utilize insulin, and therefore cannot convert carbohydrates into energy. Sugar in the bloodstream has a tendency to be abnormally high.
There are 2 types of Diabetes
Diabetes falls in to one of two categories: Type 1 or Type 2.
Type 1 Diabetes: the more severe of the two types of diabetes. No insulin or not enough insulin is produced by the body and therefore injections of insulin have to be administered on a regular basis. The majority of cases are diagnosed before the age of 20 years and possible triggers are: chemicals and toxins, cows milk drunk as a young infant, specific viruses or bacteria.
Type 2 Diabetes: insulin produced does not function correctly but this can be regulated through a strict diet. Represents 90% of all diabetics. Obesity is prevalent in 80% of people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Without proper management of diet and exercise type 2 diabetics can soon become type 1 diabetics.
Exercise & Nutrition is IMPORTANT for Diabetics
Correct exercise and nutritional prescription will aide in glucose control by decreasing insulin resistance thus improving insulin sensitivity and promoting glucose uptake.
