High Blood Pressure
World wide, high blood pressure affects 1 billion people and is estimated to cause 7.1 million deaths; 13% of overall total deaths (WHO, 2002). What the SCAREY part? It is almost always without symptoms. The Silent Killer.
What is High Blood Pressure?
High Blood pressure or hypertension is the clinical term used to describe a high blood pressure of 140/90mmHg or higher. Elevated blood pressure levels can produce structural changes in the arteries that supply the blood to the kidneys, heart and brain.
The 2 Types of High Blood Pressure
High Blood Pressure or Hypertension can be divided into 2 categories: primary and secondary.
Primary Hypertension: no single clear cause and 90% of all sufferers. Generally linked to lifestyle factors such as diet, stress and lack of exercise. Arteries continue to narrow if changes to the lifestyle are not made.
Secondary Hypertension: linked to underlying problems or disease. Causes include kidney disease, adrenal gland disease, narrowing of aorta. Steroids and oral contraceptives can also be a secondary cause of high blood pressure.
